Growing your portfolio as a marketer is so freaking important I can’t stress that enough. I’ve been so lucky to have built a blog and done social media, it has opened a lot of doors in my career already!!
I wanted to write this in case anyone was struggling to get their foot in the door & because lately more + more I get questions around my career content, what I do, how I got there, etc.
Here are the top 5 best things you can do to showcase a portfolio well && land the job you want!
- Make it visual! Especially working in marketing, presentation is everything. The more skills you can showcase the better, especially if you have experience with non-traditional marketing mediums like video, audio, print, design, etc.
- Make it comprehensive, but don’t show everything. It should be overwhelming how much experience is in your portfolio, but it shouldn’t just be a dump of everything you’ve ever done. I choose best projects or longer run campaigns to showcase in my portfolio, and each project shown has a purpose.
- Be intentional with what you add. The portfolio should flow, like a book, each action they take to scroll through should evoke emotion, create excitement, add on to the design. Less is more, but also adding a little bit more sparkle will go a long way.
- Showcase the technology / skills it took to create. Especially when it comes to design I know I drag a project into multiple applications before completion, showing visually all of those skills that went into building what you did makes your worth go up up up!
- Personalize & cater it to the role you’re interviewing for. I always keep an ongoing portfolio I can pull from, but when you submit to an employer you’re picking pages and projects that make the most sense for that role / description. You can always point out it’s the condensed version and there’s more work to be shown if they’d like to see those things too!
