I, like a lot of people always have so many clothes and so many outfits options, but then look for more by shopping and making random purchases.
Over the last year, our new house doesn’t have as much clothing storage / closet space as precious apartments we’ve lived in, which is a blessing and a curse. Because of this, I try to have a lean wardrobe and rotate pieces in and out quite frequently! As of right now, here are 5 rules I live by to ensure I curate a closet I love!
- Make sure to only keep things you wear, if you’re not wearing it it’s taking up space. it’s so important to get rid of these things before they age out and have no value, you can still sell a piece while it’s newer or currently a trend. The longer you wait, the less likely you are to sell.
- Bring in a good amount of basics. A basic white top, classic bodysuit, denim you can style multiple ways. Your staples are like the foundation of your closet.
- When you’re building a good closet — have a couple really fun statement pieces whether it’s jackets, fun tops, any pop of color you can bring in, but also pair with many outfits. These things really capture your personality, but not too many of these items.
- Come up with a system! My far right cabinet in my Ikea Brimnes closet is reserved for all bottoms, and thicker jackets, shackets, and coats that are folded. The left, I added a rod extender, so we’ve got dresses, tops from tanks all the way over to long sleeves, and tshirts folded below. The Brimnes is your typical three door wardrobe, and if I pull something out it has to go back in its home to keep the system going. Also, if I buy new things it’s 1 in, at least 2-3 out. When I first started purging it was 1 in 10 out.
- Pick a color palette. I’ve always gravitated towards blues and greens so everything really falls within that color range. Also Grey black and white is my go-to. You want multiple options for outfits, and a color palette makes that much easier.
I hope these tips were helpful, and that you guys enjoyed this blog post! I will also have a video up very soon on this 🙂
